Mexican vanilla is the cured fruit of Vanilla planifolia, an orchid. “Vainilla de Papantla” is a protected geographical name with a defined production territory; it is not a casual synonym for every vanilla product made in Mexico.
Where it belongs
Totonacapan in northern Veracruz and neighboring Puebla is the cultural geography named by the protected designation. That does not mean every vanilla-labelled product sold elsewhere comes from Papantla.
What to look for when you visit
Look for references to Papantla or Totonacapan, and ask where the vanilla was grown and cured. “Mexican vanilla” is a broad description; protected Vainilla de Papantla refers to a defined place and production tradition.
